Since the 1890s, the Kissick family has been a mainstay in Kansas City’s heavy construction industry. Renewing that legacy with a dedicated commitment to helping build their community, Jim Kissick and his partner, Pete Browne, founded Kissick Construction Company, Inc., in 1994.

2019 marks Kissick Construction’s 25th year in the heavy construction industry. The anniversary, which follows the death in December, 2018 of the firm’s co-founder, Lloyd James “Jim” Kissick III, highlights the company’s leadership team.

Browne, President of Kissick Construction, oversees all aspects of the firm. As cofounder, Browne has been directly involved in the success and growth the company has demonstrated in its first quarter-century. Browne will continue his substantial oversight of estimating, budgeting, value engineering, and contract administration for the firm. In his role as President, Browne will develop and manage Kissick’s on-going strategies and future goals; direct the firm’s growth and fiscal performance; and shape operational strategies and policies. Browne consistently praises his team and attributes the success of the firm’s 25 years of growth to the tenured team at Kissick.

“The company Jim and I built together is on a solid foundation,” said Browne. “While Jim’s passing was a shock to all of us, part of his legacy is represented by the team of professionals we have surrounded ourselves with at Kissick Construction. I couldn’t be more proud of the company we have built and I believe we have many more decades ahead of us.”

Jim’s sons, David and Lloyd Kissick, have been named Vice Presidents of the firm.

David Kissick has been with the company for more than 20 years and has been instrumental in moving the firm in the direction of new technologies and innovative solutions, including trenchless sewer pipe rehabilitation work. He will continue to serve as estimator on underground utility and earthwork projects. David will also continue the legacy of his late father’s philosophy of giving back to the community.

“My dad always believed in giving back. He cared passionately and was genuine with his gifts,” said Kissick. “He instilled in me the value of being a good civic partner in our community and I plan to carry that torch into the future. For me, it’s one of the best ways to honor his legacy.”

Lloyd Kissick, who gained his 23 years of experience with the firm working primarily in the field, will move into the leadership team serving as an estimator and liaison for onsite field operations.

Brenda Richmond, Vice President and Director of Administration, oversees the bonding and insurance duties, finance and accounting, human resources, and technology services for the company. Richmond has worked at Kissick since its inception. She also serves as corporate secretary for Kissick’s Board of Directors.

Matt Rothermel, who has been with the firm for 14 years, serves as Vice President and Director of Operations. He provides leadership to the entire Kissick field production team, including oversight of project management and all construction operations. He will lead the firm’s budget analysis, construction scheduling, vendor and materials management, job costing, and quality control efforts.

John Garvey has been named Senior Project Manager. Garvey will supervise all municipal projects, in addition to overseeing project schedules, material procurement, field compliance and project documentation. Garvey has been with Kissick Construction for 11 years.

In his role as President, Browne emphasizes the importance of the tenured Kissick leadership team carrying on the firm’s well-established level of client service, commitment to excellence, and community involvement for which it is renowned.

“Jim embodied the essence of Kissick Construction and was dedicated to making relationships our strongest foundation,” Browne said. “This leadership team has been in the trenches with Kissick and is committed to continuing the firm’s momentum by building upon the foundation Jim and I began 25 years ago. We are dedicated to maintaining the high level of client satisfaction and employee retention we have been known for providing over the past 25 years through today.”

Kissick Construction is a heavy civil contractor, specializing in critical construction environments. The firm self-performs civil and site development projects, underground utility work, engineered shoring, structural concrete contracts, and facility maintenance. Since its founding, Kissick has established annual revenues in excess of $100 million and a workforce of more than 350 employees.
