Construction Safety in Kansas City
Our Culture…
In the construction industry, there’s arguably nothing more important than safety. Kissick Construction’s philosophy towards safety is an organizational culture that places a high level of importance on safety beliefs, values and attitudes. Our work force is highly trained to accomplish their tasks in a responsible manner. Safety is certainly an aspect in our day to day activities where no amount of focus could ever be “too much.” The most important aspect of our safety procedures and overall approach is founded on the proactive—not reacting to historical events.
Our Expectations…
All of our superintendents have completed OSHA 30 certification and each member of our field crews are required to have OSHA 10 training as a minimum, with on-going required continuous internal training programs deployed on a regular basis. With well over 1000 current certifications completed at Kissick, our team has the necessary certifications and training as required by industry for specific applications. In addition to Kissick employee safety training requirements, our subcontractors are equally expected to have completed comparable industry safety training.
Standardized Tracking…
Kissick monitors safety performance with the assistance of HCSS Safety, an incredibly useful software program for tracking safety and training issues. Highlights of the program include:
- Relevant templates for productive safety meetings
- Standards for inspections
- Skillset and certification tracking
- Digital reporting of incidents in real time
- Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) database and templates
- Custom reporting and trend analysis
Our Leadership…
Chad LaVoi, our Corporate Safety Director, is directly responsible for the implementation of Kissick Construction’s safety and health program. Chad develops site-specific plans for each project, which complement and supplement any requirements promulgated by the client. Our safety managers visit our sites multiple times each week as a valuable resource for our project teams. As one of Chad’s primary responsibilities, he schedules and reviews all safety meetings, tracks status of staff certifications and skills, and regularly audits the safety performance of Kissick (and its subcontractors) on each project.

About
Chad takes the responsibility for ensuring the safety of each person on our job sites very seriously. He cares for the team and is directly responsible for the overall implementation and supervision of Kissick Construction’s safety and health program. Collaborating alongside OSHA and the Builders Association of Kansas City, Chad has helped to form a partnership and establish a specific Safety Plan for the company.
Fun Fact
Chad loves being outside no matter what, preferably with family and friends off-road riding, boating or at the beach.
Results that speak for themselves…
Kissick’s Experience Modification Rate (EMR) and Days/Restricted or Transferred Rate (DART) are consistently lower than other comparable contractors at the regional and national level. This is clear testimony of the benefits reaped by our approach to safety—both internally within the Kissick Construction organization, and to the array of clients we serve.
